high class stuff

Let me be surrounded by luxury …

I can do without the necessities!” *

Dear gemstone lovers,

it’s worth having a look behind the scenes in the world of luxury. One thing’s for sure: it has many facets. A few weeks ago Professor Ho, who lectures in ‘luxury studies’ at a Chinese university, journeyed to my home town of Idar-Oberstein, bringing a high-carat delegation with her, to learn everything there is to learn about gemstones.

Raw stones, cutting-shop, perfectly cut end product: my company headquarters is the perfect place to take a look behind the scenes in the world of luxury – and that includes the exquisite buffet! The group was particularly taken with the Gem Room, in which I present exclusive customers with a fine selection of particularly rare and valuable gemstones.

On a brief excursion to the historic Weiherschleife I showed the group the origins of the gemstone industry. From the 15th century right on into the 20th, gemstones were processed on big sandstone grinding wheels – using only the force of the water from our very own Idar stream.

A visit to the marketplace in Oberstein, where there are regional delicacies of all kinds, put the finish on our perfect day.

A truly wonderful day. I look forward to a luxurious wiedersehen!

Sparkling greetings

(Re)Visit from Great Britain

Dear gemstone lovers,

I’ve said it often enough: Idar-Oberstein is thought by some to be unspectacular, but anyone who has taken it into his heart is very unlikely ever to let go of it again.

Is it the picturesque landscapes, the delicious wines, or the fact that the most sparkling gemstones worldwide are to be found here? Probably a mixture of all those things. Idar-Oberstein is worth more than just one visit. … Continue reading (Re)Visit from Great Britain

A sparkling gift

Dear gemstone lovers,
I have some high-class holidays behind me, in the truest sense of the word. Having said that, I’m not referring to my own holiday – though that too was very nice. No, I’m talking about the vacation of two American ladies, Marilyn Pape and Shelley Bennett. The two of them paid me a visit in Idar-Oberstein last month. So how did that come about? Well, Marilyn purchased one of the famous ‘fantasy gifts’ for her daughter Shelley from the luxury department store chain Neiman Marcus: a custom locket, set with sparkling gemstones – and a three-day journey to my place in Idar-Oberstein so that she could select the right stones for herself. Our sparkling gift gallery:

GIA Feature: My treasures in front of the camera

Dear gemstone lovers,

at the most recent trade fair in Tucson I was visited by a film team from the GIA, the Gemological Institute of America.

They were particularly thrilled about a set of 12 sparkling and colourful stones from many different parts of the world. Each carefully selected stone in the set weighed 25 carats, so that altogether they tipped the scales at 290 carats. Aquamarine, rubellite, yellow beryl, green tourmaline, imperial topaz, peridot, tanzanite, peridot or kunzite – this set takes true gemstone lovers’ breath away! 2015 Gem Journal – first edition

Dear gemstone lovers,

my fascinating world of gemstones is now available in black and white too – in a premium magazine!

In the first issue, I’m taking you with me on a journey. Find out for yourself how that German lifestyle – the so-called ‘Deutsche Vita’ – can look, feel, and even taste! And, as usual, you can also find colourful, exclusive gemstones and their histories in the new magazine.

Some gemstone lovers might have already discovered the magazine in their mailboxes – and I’ll be very happy to present those who haven’t with a copy at my fair stand.

Sparkling greetings,

Stanislav Drokin meets Constantin Wild

Dear gemstone lovers,

The renowned jewellery designer Stanislav Drokin also trusts for his creations in the expertise of Constantin Wild. The result: colourful and exclusive jewellery highlights!

From engraver to designer

So how did it all start? In the 80s, Drokin started his professional life by training as an engraver – and soon discovered his passion for artistic jewellery. From then on, he created items of his own, opening his first studio in 1994.

In the time that followed, the Ukrainian designer remained eager to learn: for his studies he was drawn to the Kharkov State Academy of Design and Fine Arts (KSADA). And during his training as a gemmologist, he even stopped over in Idar-Oberstein!

N.Y., L.A.: How my treasures found their way to a famous opera singer …

Dear gemstone lovers,

for several years, I have been on good terms with the friends’ association of the Smithsonian Institution. The Smithsonian is a US research and education establishment which comprises a number of museums. In the ‘National Gem and Mineral Collection’ at the National Museum of Natural History, visitors can view what is probably the world’s most famous national gemstone collection. Alongside the legendary ‘Hope Diamond’ and the ‘Star of Asia Sapphire’, more than 15,000 gemstones – also including some sparkling specimens from my own establishment – can be seen there.
